JUXTATEN: Research and Scholarship in Haiku Paperback – November 26, 2024

juxtaten is our second themed issue, and our topic is translation, in general, as well as specific to haiku. It features new scholarship by Jennifer Hambrick (“Found in Translation,” an interview/essay concerning the work of Richard Gilbert and the Kon Nichi Translation Group of Japan); Shelley Baker-Gard (“The Poet’s AHA,” a look at the American Haiku Archives, part of the California State Library in Sacramento); Bo Zhan (“Japanese Haiku Meter,” a consideration of the rhythmic unit and prosodic structure of Japanese haiku; Toru Kiuchi (“Haiku Translation: Cultures across the Border,” a presentation given at the International Conference, English Language and Literature Association of Korea, Busan, Korea, December 12, 2012); and interview with poet/editor E. Ethelbert Miller and translator Rafi Ellenson by Crystal Simone Smith, plus considerations of the translator’s art by a dozen current practitioners (Fay Aoyagi, Antonella Filippa, Phillip Kennedy, David Lanoue, Peter Meister, Emiko Miyashita, Teji Sethi, Iliyana Stoyanova, Kosyu Takahashi, Alice Wanderer, David Watts, Klaus-Dieter Wirth); plus reviews of three recently published titles of note, and 11 new pieces from haiga master Ion Codrescu.
